201910201In the AIRA foreign language classes the students learn not only languages but also foreign culture and life.
The students of Ms.Cho’s Advanced Chinese Class experienced cooking of Chinese family dishes. (No.19-15)
Date & time: 22nd of October (Sun), 2019 10:00~15:30
Venue      : Abiko Minami-Kinrin Center, Cooking Room
Participants : Ten people (Ms.Cho Ka and her eight students, and one other )
When you try to cook foreign dishes, you may find it rather troublesome to get special ingredients which are unavailable in Japan. However, recently it is getting easier to get them as more foreign foods are imported and exotic vegetables are cultivated here.  This time they cooked five kinds of dishes using the ingredients available in Japan.
1. Steamed meat bun (niku-man)
2. Twice cooked pork (hoikoro)201910202
3. Sautee of garlic bud and pork201910203
4. Bean sprouts and cucumber dressed with sesame oil and salt
5. Soup201910204

In making the skin of steamed meat buns, the dough is fermented and flattened with a rolling pin, and then the meat filling is stuffed.  Ms.Cho said, “You’re going to eat the bun which you will make,” so all the participants made their buns with great care. As for the other dishes too, the students cooked them carefully under the instructions by the teacher.  The teacher also taught them how to prepare the ingredients before cooking and clean up the tools after cooking.
Now it’s time to eat!
All the participants enjoyed talking about Chinese food culture, cooking, etc. They also talked about how to learn Chinese pronunciation. It seems “sisheng” is difficult for them. “Sisheng” is four kinds of high/low accents. If sisheng is different, the meaning is different, too.
Volunteering at 2020 Tokyo Olympics was another topic on that day. According to a student who applied and passed for volunteering, the final decision whether they will be officially accepted as volunteers and in which fields they will work will be made after taking necessary steps including trainings and other procedures. All the participants spent an enjoyable time talking about lots of topics.
To study about foreign culture outside the classroom will be significant for the leaning of the language, which is also part of the culture.
